An introduction to cultural awareness and sensitivity
The course is designed to introduce issues of cultural awareness to those who work with international students. The course will encourage participants to explore assumptions about other cultures and their own, and ways of interacting more effectively with students from other cultures. The course will also explore aspects of cultural difference which may affect our interactions with students and students’ experience of living and studying in the UK. The course is interactive and will draw extensively on participants’ own experiences.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- explore the meaning of ‘culture’ and what it means to them
- increase awareness of their own cultures and of cultural diversity
- identify key stages of cultural adjustment and possible effects of culture shock
- develop sensitivity to the ways cultural differences may affect their interaction with international students
